Upper Mount Gravatt sits about 10 kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD, along Logan Road. The wider Mount Gravatt district takes its name from the hill itself, named in 1840 by surveyor Robert Dixon after Lieutenant George Gravatt, a former commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement. Before European settlement, the Yuggera and Turrbal peoples knew the area as kagarr-mabul, meaning "place of echidnas". Soldier-settlement farms were allotted here in the 1920s, and Upper Mount Gravatt State School opened in 1929 to serve this rural community. The suburb remained largely farmland, with local pig and poultry farms recorded well into the late 1940s.
Growth arrived quickly through the 1950s and 1960s, as rising car ownership pushed new housing south from Mount Gravatt.
